Shingle samples can look different in Indianapolis light. A documented Desert Tan project helps explain how to compare a sample with your exterior.
Quick Answer: Malarkey offers architectural shingles through Highlander, Vista and Legacy Scotchgard, plus the more dimensional Windsor Scotchgard designer line. Compare the exact product's impact rating and warranty terms alongside its installed price. Our Indianapolis Vista project shows one finished option in Brilliant Black. Your quote should also spell out the accessories and repairs needed for your own roof.
The black roof beside the light chimney siding in this photo is Malarkey Vista in Brilliant Black. On this Indianapolis home, the roof replacement was part of a larger exterior project that included deteriorated siding and chimney trim. The picture gives you a useful starting point: a named shingle on an actual house, with the surrounding work still part of the conversation.
If you've already narrowed your choice to Malarkey, the next decision is which line fits your home and the written proposal. Our comparison of Owens Corning, GAF and Malarkey covers the broader brand question. Here, we'll work through the choices within Malarkey's lineup and the details to check before you approve one.
How do the four Malarkey shingle lines compare?
Highlander is the economical architectural option, Vista adds a Class 4 impact rating, and Legacy Scotchgard extends several standard warranty periods. Windsor Scotchgard offers a designer profile with greater visual depth. Malarkey makes these lines with its NEX polymer modified asphalt.
| Product line | Appearance | UL 2218 impact class | Standard nonprorated period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highlander | Architectural | Class 3 | 10 years |
| Vista | Architectural | Class 4 | 15 years |
| Legacy Scotchgard | Architectural | Class 4 | 20 years |
| Windsor Scotchgard | Designer | Class 4 | 20 years |
We checked Malarkey's architectural product comparison and Windsor specifications on September 18, 2026. Coverage depends on the written warranty and installation requirements. The nonprorated period describes how an eligible defect claim is covered during that period; it doesn't set the roof's service life.
Start your estimate conversation with two lines you're willing to consider. Ask for the total installed difference while keeping the remaining scope the same. A comparison becomes difficult when one proposal includes needed wood repairs and the other leaves them as an open allowance.
What should you expect from the architectural look?
Architectural shingles create a layered pattern that you can judge across a full roof plane. In the Vista photo below, the darker and lighter areas run through both sides of the valley. That installed pattern is more useful for judging the overall appearance than a single loose shingle viewed indoors.
For Highlander versus Vista, discuss whether the change in impact class and coverage period is worth the quoted difference to you. For Vista versus Legacy Scotchgard, compare the written coverage and the actual samples. Both carry Class 4 ratings, so a higher price needs an explanation beyond repeating that number.
Windsor belongs in the conversation when the shape and depth of the roof are a major part of the design. Ask to see the proposed product at the scale of your house, especially if much of the roof faces the street. A roof with several prominent slopes may show the pattern differently from one mostly hidden behind a low viewing angle.
What does an impact rating tell you about this choice?
An impact classification tells you how the product performed in a defined test. It helps you compare a stated property, while a particular storm can still damage a rated roof. The shingles pictured here show an installation; they don't establish how any of these four lines will perform in a future storm.
Keep the exact product name with its rating when comparing proposals. UL 2218 and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety use different testing approaches, so their results need their own labels. Our guide to understanding impact resistant shingles covers that decision in more detail.
If a possible insurance discount affects your budget, have your insurance company confirm eligibility for the proposed product. Leave that amount out of your savings estimate until you have an answer that applies to your policy.
Which warranty details deserve a closer read?
Read the coverage offered for the proposed system, including the conditions attached to wind and algae terms. Malarkey's standard wind coverage is listed at 110 mph for 15 years across these lines. Eligible enhanced wind coverage reaches 130 mph for Highlander, Vista and Legacy Scotchgard, or 140 mph for Windsor Scotchgard. The installation and accessory requirements matter.
Algae coverage also differs. Eligible Highlander AR products have a 15 year term and Vista AR products have a 25 year term. Legacy Scotchgard and Windsor Scotchgard list limited lifetime algae terms. Confirm the exact version on the order and read the exclusions. A project tag that simply says Vista doesn't establish which algae warranty was issued for that job.
Aaron Christy discussed the appearance of algae in Yahoo's 2026 article about spring roof care:
“Algae usually shows up as dark streaks.”
Aaron Christy, founder and CEO of Indy Roof & Restoration.
That distinction helps when you're reading an algae warranty. Ask which growth it covers and what remedy applies. Dark areas in a roof photograph can also come from the shingle blend or shade, so we aren't diagnosing growth from the pictures in this guide.
Also ask who covers an installation problem and for how long. Malarkey's standard shingle warranty doesn't include contractor workmanship coverage. Any separate contractor promise or extended manufacturer option should be identified in writing, with the registration steps explained before the project starts.
What did the Indianapolis Vista project include?
Our completed project covered the main house roof, with the shed excluded. The project record identifies Malarkey Vista in Brilliant Black and an Ultimate Weather Shield roof system. It also records rotted wood siding and deteriorated chimney siding, which needed attention within the exterior restoration.
The work included repairs to two siding sections and corner trim, along with a transition board and chimney trim. The documented chimney scope also included flashing materials. Exposed exterior wood was prepared for painting. Those details explain why a full proposal needs room for the conditions around the roof as well as the chosen shingle.
We don't have a verified installed price or an issued warranty package for this particular roof. Its useful role here is showing the finished Vista appearance and the documented scope. Our Indianapolis roof replacement team can explain how a roof and its adjoining exterior details are assessed for your own proposal.
How should you choose a color and compare the price?
Choose from a current physical sample for the exact line, then compare it with the house outdoors. The sunlit view below shows the same Brilliant Black product as the earlier photos. Light and camera exposure change how a blend looks, which is why a screen image should be one reference in the decision.
Check the sample against siding that will stay and any exterior colors included in the work. If approval from a homeowners association is needed, confirm the product and color before materials are ordered. Our older guide to pairing roof colors with the exterior can help you narrow that choice.
For price comparisons, request a base proposal and a separate amount for each product change. Keep the roof area and repair allowances consistent. Ask whether a switch affects required accessories or the warranty option. That gives you a clear amount to weigh against the specific benefit you're buying.
Questions to settle before choosing a Malarkey line
Should the same color name decide the product line?
Choose the line and its terms first, then confirm the available color with a sample for that product. Don't assume a similarly named blend will produce the same pattern across different lines.
Can this Vista job show how Windsor will look?
These photographs show Vista only. For a Windsor decision, ask for a Windsor sample and a correctly identified completed installation so you can judge its designer profile.
What should stay identical when I price two Malarkey options?
Keep the measured roof scope and the approach to repairs the same. Have the contractor identify each accessory change separately so you can see exactly what causes the price difference.
Does the longest warranty period settle which line I need?
Your choice also depends on appearance and the installed proposal. Read the covered defects and remedies, then compare the cost of the specific package you would receive.
